About

Wow, this is harder than I thought.  What am I about, what is this blog about?

I’ll attempt to answer.  I see myself as a wannabe Heston Blumenthal of the vegan raw food world.  I quite enjoy putting together dishes from whatever’s in the pantry.

I don’t claim to be an expert on veganism nor the raw food movement, however I can wholeheartedly describe myself as an all-round health enthusiast.  Recently adopting a more holistic view of health and wellness, I’ve made a more conscious decision to reduce / reuse / recycle as much as possible, to be grateful for something each day, be kind in words and actions, and last but not least (hate to sound New Age-y here) practice mindfulness and being in the now.

After much pestering and prodding from hubby, friends and work colleagues, I started this blog as a means of sharing my recipes and health tips.  Personally, since embracing veganism and progressing towards a 90% raw food diet I’ve found I have higher energy levels, a robust immune system, and much clearer and smoother skin.  The latter was brought to my attention by friends and my waxing lady – errr… awkward!

I’ve focused on recipes not requiring fancy equipment or long “cooking” times.  Hmmm, 12 hours of dehydrating?  Not on this blog.  My trusty knives, veg peelers, blender and food processor see me through quite nicely.  I spend more time eating than cooking, thank you very much.

This blog documents my culinary concoctions and experiments with raw food… and may be peppered with random postings about other topics and issues.  Love, sustainability, and perhaps some of life’s quirks and idiosyncrasies in general.  Haven’t quite made up my mind yet.

Most recently, I’ve found there is a demand for reviews on businesses and products which cater to the vegan / holistic / organic / health and well-being crowd.  Given the choice of two comparable options – we want to support those who are in line with what we value!

Watch this space.

P.S.  Have had a few queries on the rationale behind the name.  Why Fresh by Friska?  Two reasons.

1.  Raw food to me is fresh.  Raw food is living food, chock full of enzymes, nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

2.  My name was inspired by the Spanish word for fresh, ‘fresca’.  So there you go!

Hope you have fun looking around, and are game enough to try a few recipes.  I’d love to know how you go… 🙂

  1. Hi there! I’m sorry for the late reply, I was very excited to get a comment from you. I am loving following your blog, I have been vegetarian for over 6 years now and your raw recipes have been wonderful to try. I have always been intrigued by going raw but a lot of recipes as you say can use dehydrators and require lots of forethought – your recipes make it easy and the ones I have tried have been absolutely delicious. You commented on my old blog, I have been documenting my most recent adventures on zoetakesthecake.wordpress.com, my trip to Europe was in November 2011! My new blog is still a work in progress, I have been trying to update my ‘About Me’ page which as you found can prove to be quite difficult. I would love to exchange tips in person since we both live in Perth, your latest post has put FERN on my Must-Do list so if you happen to be around that area sometime soon we could catch a cold-pressed chai latte together 🙂

    • Hiya Zoe, glad you’ve been trying a few recipes. A few of the ladies at work and even male friends of my hubby have found the recipes easy too, which was the whole point of my blog really! I am down to meeting in person! I live SoR so FERN is only about 8 mins drive from me. Drop me an email with your mobile number and we’ll tee it up. 🙂
